Commuting Zones and Labor Market Areas

Most of the following information is contained on the PUMS-L CD-ROM

• Overview. An overview of the commuting zones and labor market areas is available here!
• Technical Report. The Economic Research Service (U.S.D.A.) published a technical report on the delineation of labor market areas and commuting zones in September 1996. The report was written by Charles M. Tolbert and Molly Sizer. Download the files here.
• Metro/Nonmetro Classification. In the technical report referenced above, commuting zones and labor market areas are classified into various metro and nonmetro categories. Download ASCII equivalency files here: CZSIZE9.1 and LMSIZE9.1. View the record layouts for CZSIZE9.1 and LMSIZE9.1 here.
• Master county equivalency file. What Is It? View the file layout here. Download the Master equivalency file and/or the record layout documentation.

Revision Notice (12/06/94): All files available here have been revised. Users with files dated prior to 12/06/94 should download new versions. The revision involves the designation of an additional commuting zone in Alaska. The labor market area delineation has not changed (Alaska continues to be treated as one large labor market area) Specifics of the revision.
