The Louisiana Population Data Center and the Department of Sociology welcome Professor Yanyi K. Djamba to LSU. Dr. Djamba is assistant professor of sociology at Southeastern Louisiana University. He has previously worked at the Population Research Center, University of Texas at Austin and Population Studies and Research Center, Brown University. Dr. Djamba received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Sociology from Louisiana State University, and two other degrees in Demography and Engineering from the University of Kinshasa in Congo. He has conducted several studies and published more than 15 articles on sexual behavior, HIV/AIDS risks, marriage, migration, and democracy in national and international scholarly journals. He recently published a book titled Sexual Behavior of Adolescents in Contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2004). Dr. Djamba is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Sociological Association, Population Association of America, Southern Sociological Society, International Sociological Association, International Union for the Scientific Study of Population, Union for African Population Studies, International Association of French Speaking Demographers, and the French Network Gender in Action. The title of his talk is "Levels and Determinants of Extramarital Sex in the United States."

The Louisiana Population Data Center and the Departments of Sociology and Agricultural Economics welcome Professor Ann R. Tickamyer to LSU. Dr. Tickamyer is a Professor of Sociology, Director of International Development Studies and Presidential Research Scholar at Ohio University. She received her Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then taught at the University of Kentucky for 18 years. She is a past president of the Rural Sociological Society and a past editor of Rural Sociology. Her research interests are in the areas of rural poverty, gender and work, development, and social welfare provision in the U.S. and Indonesia. She is the author of numerous articles in leading journals, including American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Social Science Quarterly, Journal of Marriage and Family, Annual Review of Sociology, and Rural Sociology, as well as many book chapters, a coedited book, Communities of Work, and a forthcoming volume on spatial inequalities. The title of her talk is "Livelihood Practices in the Shadow of Welfare Reform: Devolution, Poverty, and Hardship in Rural Appalachia."

The Louisiana Population Data Center and the Department of Sociology welcome Professor Sarah Susannah Willie to LSU. Dr. Willie is an associate professor of Sociology and Chair of the Black Studies Program at Swarthmore College. She is the author of the book, Acting Black, that was published with Rutledge Press in 2003. She considers herself an applied sociologist and has written several articles on multiracial identity, creating community in a hierarchical society, and the challenges of genuine democratic living. She lives with her husband, a librarian, and son in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The title of her talk is "Acting Black: What's race got to do with it?"
