MARFIN Socio-Economic Database

The MARFIN socio-demographic database was designed with the nontechnical user in mind. The intent was to provide policymakers with baseline information which could be used to manage and assess the socioeconomic impact of fisheries policies. Our intent was to create a user interface which did not require knowledge or use of statistical analysis packages. Decennial Census data have been combined in a format that facilitates comparisons across time (1970-1990)and space (8 states, 120 labor market areas, 839 counties, and more than 4500 places). The database includes more than 330 data items for each level of geography. Coverage encompasses coastal states from Texas to North Carolina. Topical content includes standard socio-demographic information such as population, age structures, racial and ethnic composition, income distributions, and residential mobility. The MARFIN Socio-Demographic Database is unique in several ways. Drawn together for the first time are place-level data from three decennial censuses (1970, 1980, 1990). Also assembled for the first time are 1970-1990 data on commuting zones and labor market areas.
