Dr. Heneghan will discuss gender norms in 19th-century Europe, the
underlying correspondence between the discreet charm of Victorian
masculinity, the fascination with science, and fears of effeminate men
and the turn-of-the-century New Woman. Fears of inversion of
traditional gender roles are hardly new during periods of social change
and aspirations to cultural domination.
